Born in Portland to Henry and Katherine Helser, Roy was a longtime pitcher in the PCL, winning 20 game three times for the Portland Beavers. He did not play sports in high school, but played basketball, baseball and football at Linfield. In the off-season of 1946-47, he put on the basketball uniform of the hapless Spokane Orphans for a short spell. He was a longtime coach at Linfield, coaching both basketball and baseball, and even was assistant coach for the football team there.

He married Dorothy Wall (1915-2013) in 1935

UPDATED APRIL 11, 2022:
Additional research turned up that Roy was not a member of the Spokane Orhpans of the PCBL. It was his brother, Morrie, who played for them. I have removed that from his career, but will keep this page up anyway.
