Born to Yugoslavian immigrants John and Katherine Katica, Johnny set scoring records at St. Martin before entering the U.S. Army for World War 2. He coached at O'Dea HS and played two pro seasons in the PCBL.

He married Mary Brownfield in 1942 and they had two sons.
