Born to David and Lillian Leask in Alaska, Wally went to high school in Seattle, staying with a host family while his family remained in Alaska. He was the captain for the basketball team at UW, and then entered the Air Corps for World War 2. He worked for many years as an air traffic controller in Anchorage and King Salmon, Alaska, before becoming a commercial fisherman and even serving one term as mayor of Metlakatla. He died while on vacation in Las Vegas.

Married Marcella Hughes (1921-1978) in 1942 and they had two sons and three daughters. He later remarried to April.
