Born to Claude and Margaret Bolyard, Bob played for the 1938 state basketball champion South Side High School before moving on to Toledo. Bolyard entered the U.S. Army for World War 2, and after the war, he played professional basketball for Anderson and Sheboygan. He later worked for Wayne Pipe and Supply until retirement. He died in 2009 at 88.

He was married to Lillian Gerke (1923-2013) for 62 years, and they had two sons, Steven and Bruce, and a daughter, Denise.
