Chaney was a basketball and track star in high school, and then at LSU. After graduating from college, he served in the U.S. Air Corps during World War 2. He then played in the NBL and NBA before landing an assistant coaching job back at LSU. Not sure how long he stayed at LSU. He later worked as a safety coordinator with the East Baton Rouge City-Parish government.
