Born to Edward and Josephine Ertel, Mark lead his Tipton HS team to an unbeaten season his senior year. He moved on to Notre Dame where he played basketball all four years. In 1940, he took a job with Perfect Circle, and played basketball for the Kautskys before joining the Navy. He was stationed in the South Pacific during World War 2, as well as playing on the naval basketball team there. He returned from the war and continued his career at Perfect Circle, who would be bought by Dana Corporation before retiring after 39 years of employment.
Ertal married Artilla and they had three daughters, Mary Ann Bennett, Susan Jennings, and Karen Sue Ertel (who died in infancy), and three sons; Gary Ertel, Lance Clevenger and Greg Clevenger.
