Born to James and Grace Rae in Ohio, Jim went to Michigan where he studied medicine as well as be the captain of the basketball team and ran track. He played professionally briefly for Toledo before continuing his medical career. He went into the Navy for World War 2 and was one of the first soldiers to enter Nagasaki after the atomic bombing there.
In 1950 he started his residency at the Mayo Clinic before returning to Ann Arbor to start the Physical Rehab Department at U-M.
Dr. Rae was 95 when he died of an upper respiratory infection in 2013.
