After graduating from high school, Hanrahan spent seven years at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore before moving over to Georgetown. He would go on to play for the Hartford Hurricanes in 1947 for two games. He would coach at Fairfield University while earning his Master's Degree.
Moving into education, Hanrahan wanted to start a school for underachieving youths and in 1962 opened the St. Thomas More School in Oakdale, Connecticut.
