Born to Russian immigrants Hyman (1895-1985) and Sarah Alterman (1896-1997), Leonard Alterman grew up in Denver, playing high school and college basketball in Denver as well as professionally. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943, serving in World War 2. Alterman played for the Nuggets in 1948-49, but only played home games because he could not afford to take the time off work to play on the road.
He married Juanita Zinn (1924-2012) and they had two sons, Buzz and Philip, and two daughters, Judy and Nancy.
