Born to immigrants from Austro-Hungary, Baumholtz played basketball and baseball in high school and at Ohio University. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army during World War 2, and upon his return, joined the Bears of the NBL. Baumholtz also played baseball ten years in the major leagues, covering the outfield for the Reds, Cubs and Phillies. After his playing days, he worked at John Morrell Meat Company for many years. He died of liver and colon cancer in 1997.



He married Bettie Mary Bell (-1980) and they had a son and two daughters.
