Born in Jefferson City, Missouri, to William and Exie Harvey, he spent his childhood in California before returning to Missouri, where he attended college. He lettered in basketball, football and tennis there. He enter the US Army after graduating and served as an MP on the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, New Mexico. After the war, he played professional basketball for a few years before moving on to running a book store, restaurant, and eventually became a cattle rancher.
He was married to Ruth Showman, whom he met while in New Mexico, on May 22, 1945. They had three sons, Tim, Don and Mark, and a daughter, Wendy.
