Born to David and Gertrude Korovin in Brooklyn, Hal went to CCNY before playing basketball professionally for a few years. He eventually moved down to Florida to enjoy his golden years.

Hal's daughter, Gwen, received a lot of press with the death of comedian Joan Rivers. A well-respected doctor-to-the-stars, Gwen was the doctor performing the laryngoscopy on Rivers when she went into cardiac arrest, and situation that claimed Rivers' life a few days later.
