Lussow attended the University of Dubuque, where he played football and basketball.

Lussow enlisted in the U.S. Army to fight in World War 2. After playing for the Pro-Hawks in Waterloo, he got his Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin and coached and taught at Bremen High School before moving to Hillcrest High School where he was athletic director.

He married Sarah Vail (1919-2003) in 1942.
