Scharnus went to Seton Hall and then served in the U.S. Army during World War 2. After a few seasons of pro ball, Scharnus got his Masters Degree from the University of Maryland and taught at Stevensville High School. He eventually wound up working for the U.S. Army again as a Special Service Officer at Fort Meade and Fort Eusitus.
He married Elaine Palmer on April 7, 1945, and they had four sons and two daughters.
