Ray was one os six kids born to Polish immigrants Raymond and Nellie Terzynski.

Ray's brother Pete was also a basketball player, and was the team captain at Central Wisconsin Teachers College (now UW-Stevens Point) before Ray arrived.
Ray served in the U.S. Army during World War 2.
