Shamel was born in Greencastle, Indiana. He graduated from
Lincoln High School ('30). He then attended Earlham College ('34) and
lead the team to an unbeaten season. He played played for Richmond
Clothiers in all three games before they moved. He later became a life
insurance salesman. He married Laura (1912-1989) and had two daughters,
Dede Davalos and Ann Goodnoff, and one son, Timothy Shamel.
